The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Hello, everyone! If you already know what is going on, then this post is for you, if you don't this is also for you. Here's what happened.

This is:

1. An explanation about why I was gone for over a month with no online activity at all.

2. An explanation about the recent drama regarding the easter egg in Thorium and contents of the Thorium Website.

3. A layout of what I am guilty of, not guilty of, how I'm going to move forward, and an apology to the community.

4. Dispell some kinda crazy twists of the facts that resulted from grapevine word of mouth, etc. such as accusations that I hosted child porn on my site, that Thorium binaries are malicious (i.e. a virus), or that I was trying to medically influence people.

Ok, so I was gone for a little over a month at the hospital with some medical issues, with no access to a computer. I had my phone, but only used it to communicate with family.

I added an inappropriate easter egg to Thorium. It was accessible by going to the developer page chrome://chrome-urls or chrome://about, and then scrolling to the bottom, where there was a link called chrome://yiff. Clicking the link would take you to an image of a suggestive furry artwork. If you want to see what this was, you can see it here.

Valid criticism from the community includes:

 - Minors could be using the browser, and run into it.

 - The artist was not asked or given credit for their work.

 - It is unprofessional for a publicly available browser.

 - It potentially violates my own CoC, which is available Here.

I initially made it when my user base was really small, and my intention was after a few people found it, the joke would be over and I would remove it. Unfortunately, it was found by, and blew up online when I was in the hospital, so I couldn't react or remove it. Anyway, it was removed in commit 9947421. Thorium versions before M119 will have it. Going forward, the easter egg is changed to chrome://robot and instead points to this cute image that was the default "sad tab" image until M38.

To all users, even ones who had no idea about this, I am sorry.

Next, the Thorium website had a rather nasty sounding directory, with images that if you didn't know what they were for would be very alarming. The directory was a backup of an Anti-Circumcision (Intactivist) website made by the late John A. Erickson, and was up for over a decade. Since he died, and in 2021 the hoster shut down, and the web.archive.org copy was always slow to load due to Javascript and large images, I made this as a private backup. There were no links to it on the site, and one had to know the exact URL and enter it manually.

If you want to see the last archived version, see Here.

Of course, many of you will now wonder WTF this is and why someone would be against routine infant circumcision. (I am not against religious circumcision or adult circumcision, where adults can make their own choices about their own body). Please see:

This fine educational website: https://www.yourwholebaby.org/

This fine documentary (of which I was a donator): https://circumcisionmovie.com/ (It's available on Netflix)

And this exposé site intended for adult males: https://www.circumstitions.com/

Anyway, through word of mouth (the "cup telephone effect"), and some angry users, this got turned into accusations that I put child porn on the site, that Thorium was a virus (although it *has* always triggered a warning on Windows, but this is because it is not signed since I don't wanna pay for that lol), or that I was trying to influence users medically. (Consult your doctor obviously.)

This site backup should have been kept on my hard drive, or put on another site.

I deleted some issues relating to all of this, as I was freaking out, and didn't want my repos to be reported or taken down by people spam reporting a bunch of times, because of the amount of work I had put into them. To the users who felt silenced, I am sorry.

So, I am:

Guilty Of:

 - Indiscretion

 - Naivety

 - Unprofessionalism

 - Breaking users trust

Not Guilty Of:

 - Making malicious code

 - Having anything to do with child porn

 - Wanting to harm the Chromium community

Originally, stuff exploded because of Chris Titus Tech's video Here (sadly now unlisted), and then this new one Here.

If you've made it this far, I totally understand if you no longer want to be a Thorium user. If you do, then welcome, and I will continue to work on the project for the foreseeable future (it is not "Dead" as some people said).

Thank you.

 - Sincerely, Alex313031

P.S. A note to win32ss (a very talented developer) who helped me make the Thorium Win7 release:

After reading all this, I hope you may reconsider being a helper to the project.

  1. Heya,

    i knew it was right.
I also did like the picture and found it funny.
I also thought this was overblown.
Hope i can continue using this Browser.

Just take the lessons learned from this experience but mute all the noise that has been generated and move forward. No one will remember this 3 monhts down the line

    6. this just further proves why i will continue to use thorium and recommend it to others, super professional way of dealing with all you were accused of first of all, and secondly the browser is just that much better than anything else ive used (ive used literally almost all of them) and was loving brave for a long time but multiple things (mainly the crypto bloat) has made me re-think my choice. the ONLY thing i can slightly complain about with thorium is its sometimes a little behind on updates and as far as i know theres no way of updating through the browser (not confirmed, just as far as i know) but its not far enough behind to make me worry and generally its updated more than quick enough to still be safe, also alex seems to be basically the only one doing all the work (aside from very few commits from a few others) so unless the project is just dropped completely and goes dead (which i dont think will happen) i will continue using and supporting the browser and anything else thorium related anyway i can ! :)

    7. I'm a conservative and don't really get the LGBT or furry stuff, but I appreciate the developer adding information for an important mens issue in their project.

The people who are haters or calling you racist aren't doing anyone any good, but this project is.

    1. Serious because people were calling me with death threats, threats about calling the FBI, they were spam reporting my repos which got them taken down temporarily, and the new chris titus tech video caused a mass influx of github issues with people hating on Thorium. I felt I needed to do a full explanation and apology to the userbase.

    2. People are crazy, I did not know this, I think they have a lot of time to complain about nonsense things and loss the important things to worry about, anyway I'm glad you are back, the pic is funny and for me that's all. I really appreciate the work behind your thorium proyect

  4. Been using Thorium for a few months and love it. Thanks for the write up. Glad you're on the mend, and I personally feel the other items are being made a bigger deal of by folks who spend a lot of time making a big deal out of small things. Personally, I appreciate the personality of the easter egg - diversity is a win, right? :)

  5. Don't sweat the small stuff. There'll always be a small minority of people prone to being loud and obnoxious, while the vast majority of people quietly appreciate all that you do. I personally found no fault with anything you did and hope to see more jokes and lighthearted stuff like that. Keep up the good work, and don't let folks stop you having fun.

    1. iT WAS NOT SMALL at all. This was concerning for people who value privacy and support this project. It was indeed blown out of proportion, but the key here is that furry porn is very immature and is real hard to objectively trust my privacy to people who do not separate their professional life with their private one. An apology was not necessary, but an acknowledgment on this issue was warranted.

    2. you'll figure out in few years why that pic is not even worth discussing...and how and why titus is ahole for not defending you. as for circumcision, you're right, but you live in society where that's mindlessly practiced. so you're guilty of exactly nothing, just as i predicted while watching titus' clip on "affair". don't worry about this internet foolishness...just notice how web sometimes amplifies crazy thoughts.

  12. Just wanted to say I found the yiff image funny and I couldn't care about the bullshit about the specific directories on your website since they weren't publicly accessible anyway. Don't go by what reddit users say, they are the vocal minority and most of us just wanted you to continue with the project anyway.

    Good to see you back!

Congratulations you've officially gone through your first "controversy" (if you can even call it that) which means you're in the big leagues now

  13. I think the project needs more contributors for the simple fact it is a browser. Browsers are huge work of code. Needs to be more eyes on the project. Sorry to hear about your illness and hope you recover soon. Keep your head up.

    ReplyDelete
  14. It's been my default browser for several mos now and been happy as a little furry baby with it.

Only became aware of the "controversy" on reddit past couple days. Many comments had that crazed knee jerk jump-to-conclusions tone you see everywhere all the gd time, which immediately triggered my spidey senses.

I kept going. Rational benefit of the doubt comments here and there among the screeching, accusations, pre-judgements, and hairs on fire.

Titus' caution video made some good points, fair enough. Finally I carefully read your incredibly well-composed tight blog entry.

Like WTAF dude. What's wrong with people lol? Stop. Think. Reserve judgement until you get ALL the facts 😡 Nah.. that's too tall an order. The internet will keep being the internet.

Whateverman.. chalk it up, many lessons learned. I have the same acquired taste risqué humor. We carefully limit it to our inner circle and move on. Bygones. I'm in asf, let's go 💪

Keep up the good work, the vast majority of your users do not give af about your personal life and just want to keep using the great browser.

  17. It should be reddit who should be apologising. They promised me furry porn, I didn't even get nudes. Then they promised me CP, but nope, they couldn't deliver and I learned what "intactivist" means instead.
    /sarcasm (just in case).

I saw the image and couldn't care less. I heard of the backup site, and again since it is not part of the repo it was irrelevant.
Thanks for the great work. It's great to have this browser that, at lesat for me, really improves the experience in a laptop with a very modest and aging CPU.

I hope you are in better health now. Take care. And thanks again!

  18. Thank you for the explanation. I have also promoted your browser in my telegram channel. Then I told people not to use it just because it was outdated and had no update for months.

I think your apology is very professional and honest.
Personally I do also think the picture was funny and I am sure, you had no evil intentions with it. But I can totally understand the problems other people might have had with it.
Let's not let a good thing come a an unholy end. You learned from it, good. No need for any drama.

  25. As a subscriber of CTT YouTube channel, I was (very) favorably impressed by the video posted originally, extolling Thorium's capabilities. As I've always considered that CTT content contained well rounded good advice, I was enthusiastic about trying the browser and was genuinely impressed with it. So much so that I've adopted it as my main browser. Regarding all the subsequent brouhaha involving minor indiscretions and misunderstandings, it seems to me to be all overblown misconceptions, completely unrelated to the project itself! So, if I can offer my two cents, it's good that you took the initiative to air all the confusing issues, and to declare your continuing commitment to the project. I'm still a Thorium user and intend to remain so, for the foreseeable future. Keep up your good work, I and many others will still keep appreciating and depending on your good efforts.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I really didn't care about all of this drama your work in Thorium definitely overshadow all of this.

  29. Thank you for your honesty. I knew about Thorium from Tech Titus' "best browser" video, and I still agree that it's the best browser for my use. I will continue to use Thorium of course as I do now, and I hope you don't stop working on the project it has a lot of potential. A few months or years in the future when this browser blows up a second time, some people will start digging up this as a thorn of the past and create unnecessary drama about the browser being malicious, which of course (at least i really hope) isn't and will never be true. Let this comment be a testament to that.

Thank you again Alex for how you handled this situation.

    All the best,

  31. First I want to say that I absolutely love Thorium. It is the best web browser and I've been telling people that and I think, from a technical and logistical point of view, that it should be the #1 web browser in the world. I thank you for the creation. That said, I think you made a huge unprofessional mistake. Not a small mistake. I personally don't care what you believe about anything and I'm not offended by pornography or something that might be interpreted as pornography. However, you have made a wonderful accomplishment in Thorium and I think the project should be put in the hands of someone, or a group, or a board of people who are able to act more professionally. Everyone is entitled to make a mistake, and I think you need to find a way to redeem yourself and your work. More than just making an apology I think you need to show a commitment that you can be trusted and find a way to stay involved with the development but not act as the sole entity. Surround yourself with some good people and rebuild the trust that I think you deserve. In the meantime, I am removing all of my installations of Thorium and won't be using it again until you've show that you are willing to take the necessary steps to be worthy of putting my data into your hands. Given the power that a web browser, no less the best web browser in the world has I hope you'll take my words with openness and interest. Again, thank you for creating Thorium and I hope that I can use it again in the future with the confidence that I'm dealing with a development group that I can trust in every respect.

    2. Everyone is entitled to make a (one) mistake, but no one is allowed to be forgiven for it? And, by your own admission, you're now deliberately using a browser you consider *worse* (i.e., anything other than the best one) because you think the one you consider the *best* isn't good enough? That makes no sense. How can it be the best if it's less good than whatever you're using now? Get back to us when you come up with a protest method that makes any sense and impacts anyone but yourself…

  36. Ew.

Keep deviant predilections away from open source community projects. Shame is well placed. There ought not be any links from a project page to content even tangentially moralphobic.

Your "harassment" policy is fruit of the poisonous tree with inanely broad "offensive[ness]". It is intellectually dishonest.

Thorium is technically excellent. Continue developing in the privacy direction. Without privacy there can be no liberty. Without liberty and good purpose there is very little freedom.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Care to explain what's especially "deviant" or "moralphobic" (whatever that means) about furries or wanting to save innocent babies from being mutilated? Those are getting to be pretty mainstream even in the US now.

And I am usually wary of codes of conduct by default, but I haven't read Thorium's yet, so I'll reserve judgment on that.

  44. A lot of brainless NPC's in this comment section who refused to let Alex know why this was an issue. Blown out of proportion yes, but still worth addressing. No one cares about you liking furry porn, but your private life and professional life need to be separate. It is perfectly reasonable for the community to get concern about this because it shows lack of maturity and is a huge red flag as far as trust goes. Who is running this project? A passionate professional or an emotional man-child with a porn addition. Anyone who cares about privacy knows to take this small things seriously.

  69. The way the whole story went is insane.. Yes, sure, the image may not have its place in the project, but it shouldn't have gotten as much hate.
It's awful how quickly some people choose to mindlessly act instead of thinking through it.
    Stay safe!

I found the easter egg funny. I'll keep using thorium, if only because regular ungoogled chromium doesn't auto-update on windows.

  72. Bro Thorium is the only browser that can run on my old office laptop without dragging the whole laptop down to a halt and crash.

That's it for me, the only 2 things I need from a browser is that it doesn't hog the PC's scarce resources, and at the same time runs just like a normal Chrome (meaning I can add normal Chrome add ons/extensions).

Tbh idgaf about the furry and activism. I don't pay a dime anyway. But I'm sure for those ppl who care, you have sensible explanation (which honestly I didn't read your post at all, because idgaf). But you should be more careful from now on. It'd be a shame to lose this superb browser just because some snowflakes & Karens (who don't use the browser anyway) can't handle your quirks. These ppl are annoying asf, just ruining it for everyone.

Anyway, kudos man! Thanks for your hard work and just keep positive, you're doing great!
(But just tread carefully to avoid whining from those PC snowflakes)

    1. Whichever one is the newest instruction set extension your CPU supports will presumably be fastest, I guess, but I presume an older-targeted build will still work on a newer CPU. AVX2 is newest (Intel: 2013, Haswell (Core/Xeon only) / AMD: 2015, Excavator), AVX is in the middle (Intel: 2011, Sandy Bridge / AMD: 2011, Bulldozer), and SSE3 is oldest (Intel: 2004, Prescott / AMD: 2005, Venice & San Diego) (source: Wikipedia). For all I know, Windows 11 probably only supports CPUs new enough to have AVX2 anyway.

  80. After seeing the picture, which was well hidden and not that bad I don't understand why people over react like that. If a child uses the browser and finds the picture argument doesn't work! A child should not be using an internet browser without an adult keeping an eye on what they do!! And the other stuff from the other site doesn't bother me. It wasnt publicly available and you had manually enter the direct link to get to it. Sure it wasn't best practice but you seem to understand that now. Keep on working on thorium! It still a great project!

    1. > If a child uses the browser and finds the picture[,] argument doesn't work!

I don't know why you'd try to argue with the child. What would you even argue about? Just tell them it's something some adults like, and maybe someday they'll find they like it too, and leave it at that. That'll satisfy whatever small curiosity they have, leaving only their "ew! never!" reaction, and they'll avoid looking at it again.

      > A child should not be using an internet browser without an adult keeping an eye on what they do!!

Wrong. First, it's a web browser, not an internet browser. Second, children need independence to become adults, and they need to be trusted by the adults in their lives if they're to be able to trust those adults enough to come to them if something's wrong, such as if someone's bullying or predating them. Surveilling and restraining children only makes them sneaky, which makes them more dangerous to themselves (e.g., sneaking out and drinking in secret) and easier prey (because a predator can then offer them independence from their parents or something like that). Creating this kind of relationship between parent and child at a young age also results in a terrible parent–child relationship for life.

If you (meaning the person I'm replying to, or any other "you" who is reading) are a parent who has parented in such an authoritarian way, you're probably reacting with anger to what I'm saying, due to your natural psychological need to see yourself as a good parent. Once you recognize that, you can overcome it, and learn to actually be a good parent. It might not be too late to have a good, bidirectionally trusting relationship with your child.

  83. google search engine which belongs to chrome owners is full of porn, a child can access porn with two clicks, those people accusing you are idiots, instead of complaining about google/bing/yandex search engines they complain about a hidden picture inside a browser used by few peoples. they did not want to stop you for the porn or anything else, they want to stop any attempt to keep win 7 alive... you are a genius don t feel bad for the stupid people.

  88. I was very excited to have found out about this and mercury browser, only to now learn this! Man, why'd you have to do that, it's just weird and unnecessary. Will be uninstalling it from my daughters PC going forward. I'll still be using it, though my trust has definitely been broken. Easter eggs are usually be funny/cool, not weird porn...
